The year so far…

January 24, 2014

This year has started off with a real treat, I have been lucky enough to travel to Chicago to pick up the Archaeological Institute of America’s (AIA) Conservation Management award on behalf of the project. We feel very honoured to have received this award as it represents the hard work that the conservation team have put in over the last few years, and we hope that you have enjoyed reading and sharing our experiences along the way as much as the team has enjoyed bringing them to you. But don’t worry we have plenty more blogs to come over the next year.

As well as participating in the AIA conference I took the opportunity to visit some of the local attractions; however this was slightly hampered by the very cold polar vortex weather outside of the hotel. I definitely could have done with an Anglo-Saxon fur coat as I ventured out doors.

A particularly interesting morning was spent at The Field Museum, where I had the chance to see Sue, the world’s most complete T-Rex, and the Tsavo lions (The Ghost and the Darkness) which is a favourite historical story of mine.

Back in the lab the conservation program is proceeding and further joins are been slowly made between objects, Deborah Magnoler has also started the inevitable task of renumbering the fragments that have been found as part of the conservation process.

This year we have an exciting program of conservation as we move into stage two, we also have more activities and events in the pipeline. Are there any activities or events would you like to see this year?

We are also preparing for the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery purpose built Staffordshire Hoard gallery opening in the Autumn, we will bring you updates of its progress as they are made.
